A Dirty Dog or A Dead Lion

In Solomon's day, dogs were not beloved household pets as they are today. They were viewed as scavengers, unclean, and of little value. Lions, on the other hand, were symbols of strength, power, and majesty. Yet Solomon makes a startling statement: "For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion." Though a dog may seem insignificant, it is still alive and has opportunity. A lion may be impressive, but if it is dead, its strength and greatness are gone. Solomon's point is simple but profound: as long as there is life, there is hope, opportunity, and the possibility of responding to God.
