He Must Increase

One of the greatest statements of humility ever spoken is found in the words of John the Baptist: "He must increase, but I must decrease." As Jesus' ministry grew, some of John's followers became concerned that the crowds were beginning to follow Christ instead of John. Rather than becoming jealous, defensive, or competitive, John rejoiced. He understood that his purpose was never to build his own platform but to point people to Jesus. In a world that constantly encourages self-promotion, John provides a powerful example of what it means to live a Christ-centered life.

This passage reminds believers that the goal of the Christian life is not to make much of ourselves but to make much of Christ.
