Our Constitution

A church constitution serves as a guide for how a church operates, outlining its beliefs, leadership structure, membership expectations, and governing principles. It helps ensure that all ministry and decision-making are carried out in an orderly, biblical manner while preserving the mission and values of the church. If you would like to learn more about how Open Door Baptist Church is organized and governed, you can view our constitution below.

Preamble

Having received the Lord Jesus Christ by faith and relying wholly upon Him for our salvation, believing that the Bible is the divinely inspired, plenary, infallible, and authoritative Word of God, and believing that all things should be done decently and in order, we, the members of Open Door Baptist Church, voluntarily adopt this constitution as a declaration of our faith and as the order of our operation. May it be to the praise of His glory.

Article I - Name

The name of the organization shall be Open Door Baptist Church of Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

Article II - Purpose

Our purpose is to glorify God by conducting a Baptist Church in accordance with the Word of God. We will, therefore, strive to propagate the Gospel at home and abroad (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 1:8), to promote the worship of God, to preach and teach the Word of God without fear or compromise (2 Timothy 4:1-5; Gal. 1:8-9), to edify and promote the growth of believers (Eph. 4:11-16; 2 Peter 3:18), to administer the ordinances of the church, to ordain qualified men to the gospel ministry, to promote the establishment of other Baptist churches, and to establish and maintain necessary educational ministries to ensure the proper training of our children. We further strive to maintain a good testimony for Christ in our community by godliness and good works while courageously and lovingly defending the faith once delivered to the saints (Heb 10:23; Jude 3).

Article III - Covenant

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 1:12; Eph. 2:8; 2 Thes. 2:13; Isa 12:2; John 3:16; Acts 16:31) and on profession of our faith, having been baptized by immersion in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:36-39; Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38, 10:48, 16:31-34), we do now, in the presence of God, holy angels, and this present assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 12:14-27; Rom. 12:4-8).

It is our desire, to the best of our ability, according to our Christian conscience, and by the aid of the Holy Spirit:
  • To walk together in Christian love (1 Cor. 1:10; Rom. 16:5-6; 2 Cor. 3:5; Amos 3:3; 1 John 2:10);
  • To strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort (Her 10:24-25; Gal. 5:13; 1 Sam. 12:23; James 5:16; 2 Peter 3:18); to promote its prosperity and spirituality (1 Thes. 5:14; Matt 16:17; 1 Cor. 15:2);
  • To sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines (Heb. 10:25; Acts 2:42; Rom. 6:13-14; 1 Peter 2:9; Matt. 18:15-17; 2 Thes. 3:14-15); to give it a sacred preeminence over all institutions of human origin;
  • To contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations (2 Cor. 8:14, 9:7; 1 Thes. 5:14; Mal. 3:10; Heb. 13:7; Gal. 6:6, 10; Luke 10:7);
  • To maintain family and private devotions (2 Cor. 8:5; Matt. 6:6; 7:7; Luke 18:1; 1 Tim. 2:8); to religiously educate our children (Eph. 6:4; Deut. 6:7-12; 2 Tim. 3:15; Prov. 22:6); to seek the salvation of our relatives, acquaintances, and all others (Eph. 5:8-11; Matt. 28:19-20; Rom.  9:3);
  • To walk circumspectly in the world (Eph. 4:1-3; 1 Thes. 5:15; 1 John 2:15; Col. 3:17); to be just in all our dealings, faithful to our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment (1 Peter 2:2; Heb. 13:21; Phil. 3:16-18); to avoid all gossiping, backbiting, and excessive anger (Matt. 12:36; Prov. 26:20; Rom. 1:30; Eph. 4:26-31); to abstain from worldly amusements; to live in a manner that never brings shame or reproach on the name of Jesus Christ.
  • To be free from all oath-bound secret societies and partnerships with unbelievers;
  • To treat our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, with respect, and to abstain from illegal drugs, intoxicating drink as a beverage, and the non-medical use of drugs (Prov. 20:1; 23:29-32; Eph. 5:18; 1 Thes. 5:22; 1 Cor. 6:19-20, 10:31);
  • To be zealous in our efforts to advance the work of our Savior (John 15:16; 1 Cor. 15:58; 2 Cor. 5:20); to watch over one another in brotherly love (Gal. 6:2; Rom. 14:7; 2 Thes. 3:14-15; Phil. 2:3-4); to remember each other in prayer (Heb. 13:18; Eph. 6:18); to aid each other in sickness and distress (Rom. 12-13; Phil. 4:16); to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy of speech (1 John 3:17-18; James 3:9-13; Col. 3:17; 4:6); to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the commandments of our Savior, to secure reconciliation without delay (1 Cor. 6:7; Matt. 18:15, 21-22; Rom. 14:19).
We further commit to unite with another church as soon as possible if we move from this place so that we can uphold the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word (Acts 9:19; 18:27; Romans 16:1-2; Hebrews 10:25; Galatians 1:9).

Article IV - Articles of Faith

Although it is within the Holy Scriptures as a whole that our full faith stands, the following sets forth the beliefs of Open Door Baptist Church which shall direct our faith and practice; therefore, each and every person who desires to become a member and remain a member of this church shall subscribe to the following Articles of Faith.

  • Section 1: Scriptures
    • We believe that the Bible is the complete, written Word of God. We believe that all sixty-six (66) books, as originally written, comprising of the Old and New Testaments are verbally (every word) and plenarily (in their entirety) inspired (God-breathed) by the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we believe that the Bible is infallible, free from error or contradiction, and that God has preserved His Word for us today. We believe the KJV reflects that preservation, therefore we will use it in all our preaching and teaching. We further believe that the Bible is accurate and reliable in science, history, and every other matter it discusses. As such, we believe that the Bible is the only reliable source of authority for all matters of faith and practice. Finally, we believe that anyone who adds to or takes away from this completed revelation is cursed of God. (Ps. 12:6-7; 19:7-11; 119:89, 105; Isa. 40:8; Mark 13:31; John 17:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Peter 1:24; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Rev. 22:18-19)

  • Section 2: God
    • We believe in one God, who is Creator of all, holy, sovereign over the affairs of man, eternal, and existing in three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe that these three are coequal, coexistent, and coeternal; therefore, God is without division as to nature, essence or being. (Gen. 1:1; Ps.83:18; 139:7-10; Matt. 28:18-20; John 10:30; 15:26-27)
  • God the Father - We believe that God is the Creator of all mankind, making man His offspring. However, we believe that He is Father only to those who receive Jesus Christ as Savior; that He is perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom, and measureless in power; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; that He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and omnibenevolent. Therefore, we believe that He is the object of our worship and praise and that He always acts in moral perfection. (Ps. 65:2; 100:3; 139:1-24; Matt.5:45; John 14:6; Acts 17:26-29; 1 Tim. 2:5; 1 Jn 2:16; Jas. 3:15-17)
  • God the Son - We affirm the absolute deity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. We believe that God the Son is the Creator and Sustainer of all creation; that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary; that He is God manifest in the flesh, very God and very man; that He was sent by God the Father for the purpose of being the perfect sinless sacrifice for the sins of mankind; that He died in our stead, was buried and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, gaining victory over sin and death. We believe that He is the object of our faith; that He is the only way to the Father; that today He is making intercession for us as our Advocate. We believe in His imminent return and as the church (of which He is the Head), we are looking for His coming in the rapture to claim His own; that He is the King of kings and will rule and reign for 1,000 years upon the earth; that He will judge the evil works of darkness at the end of time. (Isa. 61:3; Luke 1:26-38; John 1:1,14; 3:13-17; 14:16; Acts 16:31; 1 Cor. 15:1-4, 55-57; Col.1:14-18; 1 Thes. 4:13-5:11; 1Tim.2:5; Heb. 4:14-16; Rev. 20:4-6, 11-15)
  • God the Holy Spirit - We believe the Holy Spirit to be a Divine Person, equal with the Father and the Son and of the same nature; that He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment; that He bears witness to the Truth; that He is the agent of the New Birth; that He baptizes all true believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sanctifying all of them unto the day of redemption; that He endues, guides, teaches and helps believers; and that it is the privilege and obligation of all the saved to be filled (controlled) with the Spirit, the evidences being the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance, but not the speaking in tongues or other sign gift manifestations commonly held to by the Charismatic and Pentecostal assemblies. In relation to this evil world, we believe that the Holy Spirit restrains the evil one through the local church until the purposes of God be fulfilled. (Matt. 28:19; John 14:16,17,26; 16:7-15; 2 Cor. 13:14; Gal. 5:2-23; Eph. 2:18, 5:18; 2 Thes. 2:1-12; Heb. 2:3-4; 1 Peter 1:22-23)

  • Section 3: Creation
    • We believe the Genesis account of creation as being neither allegory or myth, but a literal, historical account of the direct, immediate creative acts of God without any evolutionary process. We believe that the Genesis account of creation took place in six (6) days, each one being twenty-four (24) hours. Finally, we believe that man (spirit, soul, and body) was created by the direct work of God on the sixth day and that man is the crowning jewel of God’s creation, being created in His image and likeness. (Gen. 1:1-2:25; Deut. 6:5; John 1:3; Col. 1:16)

  • Section 4: Man
    • We believe that man was created by God in His image, after His likeness, sinless and innocent. We believe that Adam by voluntary transgression, in disobedience to his Creator fell from his sinless and happy state, incurring both physical and spiritual death. We believe that though all men are born with a sinful nature as the result of Adam’s sin, we still retain God’s image and likeness from conception. However, man comes under God’s just condemnation from the moment he chooses to personally and knowingly transgress God’s law written on his heart from birth. As the result, all men who are not saved will endure eternal punishment in the lake of fire. (Gen.1:26-27; 2:7-3:24; 2 Sam. 12:23; Ps.51:5; Matt.18:10-14; Rom. 5:10-19; Eph. 2:1-10; Rev. 20:14-15)
  • Human Sexuality and Marriage - We believe that God created each person as male or female from birth and that these two distinct, immutable, and complementary sexes together reflect the image of God. We reject, therefore, the transgender movement which gives to man the right to assign his/her own gender, thereby nullifying the sovereign choice of their Creator. We believe that marriage was ordained of God and instituted in the Garden of Eden. We believe that marriage is biblically defined as God joining one man and one woman exclusively in a one-flesh union until death parts them. Therefore, we reject any attempt of man to redefine what God has already defined in His Word. We further believe that God has commanded that there be no intimate sexual relations outside of a marriage between a man and a woman, and that God has forbidden adultery, fornication, pornography, homosexuality, lesbianism, incest, pedophilia, and other sinful perversions of God’s order. (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:18-25; Ex. 20:14; Lev. 20:10-17; Matt. 5:28; 19:4-6; Rom.1:18-32; 1 Cor. 5: -6:10; 1 Thes. 4:1-8; Heb. 13:4)

  • Divorce and Remarriage - We believe that marriage as an institution was divinely created, originating in the mind of God and not man. We, therefore, reject the notion that marriage is a social construct and therefore man is able to define it as he wills. Therefore, we believe that all issues related to marriage, divorce and remarriage should be made under the direct guidance of the Word of God. We believe that God’s intent for marriage is permanence, until death parts us. We believe that divorce is a distortion of God’s intention, seeing that marriage is a picture of the relationship between Christ and His bride, the church (Eph. 5:25-27). We believe that those who are divorced or have married one who is divorced are disqualified from holding the church office of pastor or deacon. We believe that divorced persons are permitted to hold other positions of service in the church and can be greatly used of God in service to the Lord and the advancement of His cause. (Mal. 2:14-17; Matt. 5:31-32; 19:3-12; Rom. 7:1-3; 1 Tim 3:2, 12; Titus 1:6)

  • Abortion and Euthanasia - We believe that as man was created in the image of God that all human life is sacred and of inestimable worth from conception through natural death. Therefore, we conclude that abortion constitutes the unjustified, inexcusable taking of unborn human life. Therefore, we reject all teaching that legitimizes abortion for any cause: rape, incest, birth defects, gender selection, birth or population control, or the mental well being of the mother. (Ex. 20:13; Job 3:16; Ps.51:5; 139:1-18; Isa. 44:24; 49:1,5; Jer. 1:5; 20:15-18; Luke 1:44)

  • We believe that since God is the giver of life that only He has the right to determine the end of life. We recognize that He has granted the authority to government to enact capital punishment for the proven guilt for certain crimes. Yet, we reject the view that man has the right to take innocent life because of physical illness that is viewed as terminal or because a life is viewed as no longer having quality. (Gen. 9:6; Ex. 21:12; Ps. 139:13-14)

  • Section 5: Sin
    • We believe that sin is the transgression of God’s law. We believe that sin first entered into the universe when Satan led a rebellion against God among the angels. We believe it entered upon earth when Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. We believe that sin is a universal problem; that sin separates man from God; that it brings physical, spiritual, and eternal death. We believe that there is no remission of sin apart from the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God and man’s repentance. Those who willfully choose to sin justly fall under God’s condemnation and are sentenced to a literal place called hell. If they die without Christ that sentence will be carried out without hope of parole. Instead, they will await the Great White Throne Judgment and their eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire. (Gen. 2:17; Isa. 14:12-14; Ezek. 18:4; 28:14-19; Matt. 11:23; 25:41; Luke 16:23; 24:46; John 3:18-21; Rom. 3:10-26; 5:12; 6:23; 7:23-24; Eph. 2:1,5; 1 John 3:4; Rev. 20:14-15)

  • Section 6: Salvation
    • We believe that the only escape from the domination and condemnation of sin is through the redemption wrought by Jesus Christ who by appointment of the Father, freely and voluntarily took upon Himself our nature, yet without sin, and by the shedding of His blood in death made a full and vicarious atonement for our sins. Therefore, He is in every way an all sufficient Savior. We believe that salvation cannot be earned through merit or good works, but that it is wholly of grace, a free gift of God in the Person of Jesus Christ. We believe that salvation is received individually by repentance from sin and a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (John 1:12; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Heb. 9:24-25; 10:19; 12:24; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Rev. 1:5)
  • Regeneration - We believe that in order to be saved, sinners must be born again; that the new birth is not a process; that in the new birth through the Holy Spirit, the one dead in trespasses and sins is made partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life, the free gift of God; that its proper evidence appears in the holy fruits of repentance and newness of life. (John 3:1-8; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:19-21; Eph. 2:1; Col.2:13; Titus 3:5; 2 Peter 1:4)

  • Justification - We believe that justification is the judicial act of God whereby He declares us to be righteous through faith in Christ Jesus; that justification includes the pardon of sin and the imputations of God’s righteousness; that it is bestowed, not by any work which we have done, but solely through faith in the blood sacrifice of our Redeemer (Acts 13:39; Rom. 3:21-4:8; 5:1-9; 8:1; 2 Cor. 5:18-21; Eph. 1:7).

  • Sanctification - We believe that sanctification is an act and a process whereby God sets apart all believers unto holiness. He then conforms them to the image of Christ, completing the process of sanctification at the return of Christ for His saints. (Rom. 8:29; Eph. 1:3-4; 4:11-13; 1 John 3:2)

  • Two Natures - We believe that man is born with a sinful nature and at the time of his new birth, he receives a righteous nature. These two natures are in constant conflict within every believer. The new nature will be victorious when we yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives. (John 3:1-12; Rom.6:11-14; 7:15-25; 8:1-29; 1 John 4:4)

  • Glorification - We believe that when Christ comes for the church, all believers will be changed in the twinkling of an eye and will become like Christ at His appearing, and that our corruptible bodies will become incorruptible.  (1 Cor. 15:51-54; 1 John 3:2)

  • Eternal Security - We believe that all the redeemed are saved with an eternal salvation from the moment they believe on Christ, are kept by God’s power, and are thus secure unconditionally in Christ forever. We  believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word; which, however, forbids the use of one’s Christian liberty as an occasion for the flesh. (John 6:37-39; 10:28; Rom.8:38-39; 1 Cor. 1:4-8; Gal, 5:18; Phil.1:6; Titus 2:11-15, 1 Peter 1:5; 1 John 5:11-13)

  • Section 7: Church
    • We believe that the church is a called out assembly of believers and that the church began on the Day of Pentecost. We believe that membership in the local church is limited to individuals who truly know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and have been baptized by immersion. We believe that the Bible is the sole rule of the church’s faith and practice. (Acts 2; 1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 4:15-16; 1 Peter 2:9)
    • We believe that the church exists in two aspects:
  • Organism - We believe that the church as an organism is the body and the bride of Christ, is fully composed of all the redeemed. We believe that Christ gave Himself for the church; that He is its only true head. ( 1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 1:20-23; 3:3-11; Col. 1:18)
  • Organization - We believe that the establishment and the continuation of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament. We believe that the church as an organization is an assembly of baptized believers, voluntarily associated by covenant in faith for fellowship, worship and service; that its mission is the spread of the gospel to all men and to earnestly contend for the faith. We believe that its only ordained offices are pastor and deacons whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures. We hold that the local church has the absolute right of self-government free from the interference of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations, religious or governmental; and that its only superintendent is Christ through the Holy Spirit; that it is Scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the gospel; and that each local church is the sole judge of the measure and methods of its cooperation, having the Scriptures as her final authority for all things related to faith and practice. On all matters of membership, of polity, of government, of discipline, and of benevolence, the will of the local church under the guidance of the Holy Scriptures is final. (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 14:27; 1 Cor. 3:9-17; 16:19; 2 Cor. 1:1; Gal. 1:2; 1 Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11; Rev. 2:1-3:22)

  • Section 8: Ordinances
    • We believe that there are two ordinances to be observed by the Christian church. Further, we believe that these two ordinances are symbolic and not sacramental. These two ordinances are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
  • Baptism - We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; that it takes place after a person has received the free gift of salvation; that it pictures the essential facts in redemption - the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe that baptism presents a testimony of what has already taken place in the believer’s heart, is a token reminder that their life is hid in Christ and they are to walk in newness of life, and that it represents the believer identifying with Christ in His Lordship and leadership over all aspects of life. We believe every believer should follow this ordinance as an act of obedience to the Lord, and baptism is a prerequisite for local church membership. (Matt. 28:18-20; Luke 14:25-27; Rom. 6:4; Acts 2:41; 8:12, 26-39)
  • Lord’s Supper - We believe that the Lord’s Supper commemorates the death of Christ, symbolizing His sacrifice for our sins; that the elements - the bread and juice - are only symbols of His broken body and shed blood, and that our observance is a pictorial testimony of a believer’s fellowship with his Savior and should be preceded by solemn heart-searching and self judgment. (Matt. 26:26-30; 1 Cor. 10:16-21; 11:17-34)

  • Section 9: Satan
    • We believe in the personality of Satan, the fallen Lucifer, the Devil; that he is a created being who fell through pride and rebellion against God; that he is the author of sin, and the cause of man’s temptation and ultimate fall. We believe that Satan is the open and declared enemy of God and man; that he influences the nations/governments of this world in their anti-God agenda along with its media outlets; that he oppresses the believer and opposes the church through persecution of her followers and infiltration of her ranks and corruption of her doctrines. Yet, that he has been defeated by the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; that his ultimate end is eternal judgment in the lake of fire. (Job 1:6-7; Isa. 14:4-16; Matt. 4:1-11; Jn 14:30; 16:11; Gal. 4:8; Eph. 6:12; I Peter 5:8; I John 3:8; Rev. 12:9-11; 20:7-10)

  • Section 10: Angels
    • We believe that God created spirit beings who because of Satan’s revolt in heaven became divided between good and evil hosts, which we refer to as angels and demons. The angels of heaven, ministering spirits, are sinless and pure and are forever seeking to praise God in their ministries for Him and His people. Their ministries, ranks, and order differ, and their strength, appearance, travel, etc., are not bound by natural human laws. They are immortal, incorporeal, and innumerable. They do not marry. (Matt. 18:10; 22:30; Mark 5:2; 8:38; Col. 1:16; 1 Thes. 4:16; Heb. 1:14; Jude 6,9)

  • Section 11: Future Things
    • We believe that, at death, the believer’s soul immediately passes into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ while the body rests in the grave; that the soul of the unbeliever immediately goes to Hell, experiences conscious suffering, following which the soul will be reunited with the body, receive final judgment, and spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. We believe in the imminent, personal, pre-tribulational, pre-millenial coming of Christ in the clouds  where He will call up His church; following this rapture of the saints, the earth and its inhabitants will experience a seven-year tribulation period, while in heaven the believers will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to give an account of their lives before the Savior. They will also enjoy the time of celebration known as the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Following this, Christ will return to the earth in great power and glory to establish His kingdom, ruling in righteousness for one thousand years. During this time Satan will be bound into the bottomless pit. At the conclusion of this time Satan will be loosed for a short time, deceiving the hearts of many. Then Satan will ultimately be defeated and will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity. Eternal damnation for the wicked will be ushered in at the Great White Throne Judgment, while the righteous will enter their eternal state of bliss. (Matt. 25:46; John 5:28-29; 2 Cor. 5:10; Phil. 3:20-21; 1 Thes. 4:13-18; 2 Thes. 2:1-10; Rev. 1:1, 19; 19:9-13; 20-22:6)

  • Section 12: Stewardship
    •  We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility for every Christian believer to give regularly and systematically of their time, talent, and treasure, in the service of the Lord Jesus Christ; that the financial needs at home and around the world should be met by the scriptural principles of tithing, systematic giving, and the freewill offerings of God’s people. Although we recognize designated gifts, we believe that a Christian relinquishes all rights to direct the use of the tithe or offering once the gift has been made whether designated or not, thus surrendering the direction of the tithes, offerings, and designations to the will of the majority of the congregation. (Gen. 14:20; Prov. 3:9-10; Mal 3:10; Matt 23:23; 25:14-30; Acts 4:34-37; 1 Cor. 8:1-15; 16:2; 2 Cor. 9:6-7; Gal. 6:6; Eph. 4:28; 1 Tim. 5:17-18; 1 John 3:17)

  • Section 13: Separation
    • We believe that we are mandated by God in the Scriptures to separate ourselves unto Christ and, as much as is possible from any participation in or endorsement of sin; from ecclesiastical organizations and religious personalities that deny the faith or compromise its message; from brethren that walk disorderly or who unrepentantly continue in sin or engage in the compromise aforementioned. We believe that believers are not to enter marriage, partnerships, or other bonds with unbelievers which creates an unequal yoke. We, therefore, urge every member to abstain from every questionable thing, keeping himself/herself from all manifestations of disorderly conduct in religion, dress, conversation, amusement, business, habit, etc., according to the teachings of God’s Word. (Rom. 12:1-2; 14:13; 2 or. 6:14-18; Eph. 4:1-32; 5:8-11; Phil 2:12-16; 1 Thes. 5:22; 2 Thes. 2:15; 3:6-15; 2 Tim. 3:1-5; Titus 3:1-11; James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-16; 2 John 9-11)

  • Section 14: Missions
    • We believe that God's love has been extended to sinners for their salvation, and that He has commissioned us, His people, to publish this good news throughout the world, giving opportunity for others to become His disciples and that we are to be diligent and zealous in our evangelistic efforts, both personally and as a church, also giving prayer and material support to faithful mission endeavors around the world. (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-48; Acts 1:8; 2 For. 9:1-15; 1 Tim. 2:3-6; 2 Peter 3:9)
    • We further believe the New Testament missions mandate is from Christ to His body, the local church. (Matthew 16:18-19; 1 Cor. 3:6-9) We believe this mandate is for each local church to train disciples from their own flock who can take the Gospel of Christ to countries and cultures foreign to them (Luke 24:46-46; John 20:21; 1 Cor. 6:19-20), to target an unreached or under -reached people group for church planting (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16), and to train them to reach their own people locally as well as to reduplicate the missions mandate cross-culturally (Acts 1:8; 2 Tim. 2:2). We believe that a missionary proper is an ordained preacher/evangelist who meets the Biblical qualifications of a bishop from 1 Timothy 3 & Titus 1, yet with a calling to make disciples among an unreached people. (Rom. 10:14-15; Eph. 4:11-12) We believe that churches should be planted as independent from inception using evangelistic methods which target the sinner’s conscience, not his societal circumstances and model a ministry of autonomy which can be replicated by the faith and finances of the nationals themselves. (Acts 2:41-45; 1 Cor. 1:23-24; 9:13-16; Phil. 4:15-19)

  • Section 15: Music
    • Believing that God has “made every thing beautiful in his time” (Eccl. 3:11) and that music can both encourage us in our personal walk and aid us in our public worship, Open Door Baptist Church aspires to a high standard of music for worship and ministry. We believe that the music used in our worship services should:
      • Exalt the Savior (1 Cor. 10:31);
      • Edify the Saint (Eph. 4:11-12);
      • Evangelize the Sinner (Matt. 28:19-20); and
      • Entreat the Savior (Eph. 6:18, 1 Thess. 5:17).

    • We believe that these goals are accomplished as we select music that focuses on the person of God (Psalm 135:1-2), has the purpose of pleasing God (Psalm 96:7-8), and follows the scriptural pattern of being spiritual in nature and grounded in the truth (John 4:23-24). We believe that music itself is moral and communicates, along with the text, a theological and philosophical message (Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16; Ex. 32:17-18; 1 Sam. 16:23). We further believe that these high standards in music, which reflect the nature and character of our holy God, are best represented in the traditional hymns that have been recognized by conservative Christianity. We also recognize that there are many God-honoring songs written today by composers which offer a fresh approach while edifying the body of Christ and glorifying our God. However, we reject the use of a contemporary style and all genres that reflect the spirit of the age and that appeal to the appetites of the flesh (2 Cor. 6:17-18). Although some may differ with these views in relation to their personal choices in music, we encourage all to remain unified under these biblical principles as it relates to the music selected for our worship and ministries.

  • Section 16: Sign Gifts and the Charismatic Movement
    • We believe that God in His sovereign will bestows upon those whom He has chosen certain gifts to accomplish the work of ministry. We believe that every believer has at least one gift to be used in the service of the Lord. We believe that the sign gifts, recorded for us in 1 Corinthians 12, were given at the beginning of the church age to authenticate the New Testament message of the apostles. We believe that these gifts, including tongues and healing, came to an end with the completed Scriptures. Therefore, we reject the modern Charismatic movement which teaches and promotes the continuation of these gifts. (Rom. 12; 1 Cor. 12-14; Heb 2:3-4)

  • Section 17: Lawsuits Between Believers
    • We believe that Christians should not bring civil lawsuits against other Christians or the church to resolve personal disputes. We believe that the church possesses the necessary resources to resolve personal disputes among its members. We do believe, however, that a Christian may seek compensation for injuries from another Christian’s insurance company as long as the claim is pursued without malice or slander. (1 Cor. 6:1-8; Eph. 4:25-32)

  • Section 18: Church and State
    • We believe in the separation of the church and state; that civil government is of divine appointment for the interest and good order of society; that civil authorities are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored and obeyed except in the things clearly opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only Lord of the conscience and Prince of the kings of the earth. (Matt. 22:21)

  • Section 19: Authority of the Declaration of Faith
    • The Declaration of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God, is the sole and final source and authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of man. We do believe, however, that the foregoing Declaration of Faith accurately represents the teaching of the Bible and therefore is binding upon all members.

Article V - Autonomy and Associations

We the members of Open Door Baptist Church declare by our own action that we are self-governing, self -supporting, and self-propagating. We acknowledge that Christian churches should work together in mutual fellowship and cooperation in order to maintain purity of life and doctrine in the church, to resist evil, to strengthen believers in the faith, and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the end of the earth. We further declare that associations with churches and fellowships shall never be anything other than voluntary. The decision to work with other churches or groups will be made solely on the biblical principles of separation. The principle of primary separation requires that we refrain from working with the unbelieving liberal and apostates as represented in the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches (II Corinthians 6:11-7:1). The principle of secondary separation requires that we refrain from working with professing believers and ministries who compromise the truth of God’s Word, as represented in New Evangelicalism and the Charismatic Movement (Romans 16:17-18; II Thessalonians 3:1).

Nominees will be contacted in a manner consistent with the majority votes of the congregation.
